The ProposalOn one of our many visits to Indianapolis to visit my family, Kelvin promised my Great-Grandmother that we would visit her the following year before Christmas. We talked about going all year long – but never finalized plans. At the end of October Kelvin was really pushing to go see her. After several conversations, he talked me into going the first weekend of November. I made it to Indianapolis a few hours before him and was complaining the entire time because the trip was before the holidays and I would have rather saved money.

The next day we went to go visit my Grandmother and everyone in my family was there saying congratulations. A few weeks prior, I was informed that one of my uncles told the whole family that we were ALREADY engaged and we were coming to Indianapolis to pick out the wedding venue. You can only imagine what was going through Kelvin’s head while all of this was going on. I thought it was funny.

After leaving my Grandmother’s house we headed Downtown to a restaurant Kelvin wanted to checkout. As we were walking to the restaurant, we were passing this place where I’ve always wanted to get married – the Downtown Sheraton. I was like, “Kelvin look, this is where we are going to get married; the top floor has windows going around it.” Kelvin was busy on his phone finding the address to the restaurant – which we “discovered” was closed until dinner. Instead, we checked out the restaurant at the Sheraton.

After we finished lunch, Kelvin wanted to sneak upstairs and take a picture of the city in the room where I always dreamed of getting married. Me being scary, I said yes, but was rushing to hurry up and get it done without being caught. As we are approaching the top, Kelvin had his camera out taking pictures of the city. Once we made it to the top, we saw a work crew setting up for a wedding. I’m still sneaking trying not to get caught – but, Kelvin was taking his time peeking his head in every room. He told me that he found someone that works there and she was going to take our picture.

Laura, the hotel wedding coordinator, came in to lift the blinds to take a picture. As the blinds were being raised, Kelvin told me that he had a small gift for me. Inside the beautifully wrapped package was a book titled, ‘Our Love Story.’ After placing my purse and book on the table, I turned around to find Kelvin down on one knee. The only thing I could say was, “Oh my God are you serious?” Eventually he had to ask me what was my answer (I guess he was tired of being down there on one knee). I was so shocked; I hadn’t even looked at the ring (which is absolutely gorgeous by the way). Kelvin and I went to the room, called our families and headed back to my Grandmother’s house to tell her the “official” news.

Once in the car, I started to read the book Kelvin had made. As I was going through the book, Kelvin put in the accompanying CD, and I began to cry…
